Rest In Peace Chapter 1
Slowly the evening sky took on a cool chill. The wind picked up and lightly ruffled his bangs. As he walked, he couldn't help but feel someone was following him. He kept his slow pace, but paid close attention to the sounds around him. He didn't hear footsteps, leaves rustling or anything except the noise he, himself was making. Yet he still felt as if someone was behind him. Stalking him in the still night. Despite himself, he stopped in his tracks and looked around. No one. Silence. A chill ran down his spine. He wasn't sure why, but he didn't want to stay there any longer. He continued to walk through the woods to the house. All the while he kept a close alert to his surroundings. He couldn't help but feel that something was wrong. The feeling that he was being followed subsided, however, the sinking feeling in the back of his mind remained. The closer he got to the cabin, the worse it became. As his hand rested on the door knob, the chilled air warmed considerably. He let himself in and was greeted by an unusual silence. Normally he could hear Duo's laughter or Quatre's violin. He stepped into the main room to find Wu Fei sitting cross legged in a chair. They stared at each other a moment before Trowa spoke. "Where is everyone?" "Yuy and Maxwell are on missions." "And Quatre?" Wu Fei bowed his head and averted his eyes from his comrade. "Maybe you should sit down." "Where's Quatre?" "Dead." Trowa felt as if someone had punched him in the gut. "He was captured during his last mission. They set it up for him to be executed. They had him transferred to a base to carry it out. It was the base that you destroyed last night." "Are you sure Wu Fei?" The Chinese pilot nodded. That's all Trowa needed to know. He turned and left the room. What have I done? I destroyed the one person that meant everything to me. How could I? Lightning crashed, drowning out the darkness of the small room. Trowa laid alone on the bed that he and Quatre once shared, listening to the rain pound against the window. Torturing himself with hated thoughts. How could I have done that to him? He didn't deserve such a fate. A single tear slid from the emerald prison, as he held his pillow closer. Why didn't I realize it? Why couldn't I sense him there? I always could before. Why couldn't I this time? Suddenly he remember the night before, when he thought he heard the Arab scream. That must have been when he got caught. Quatre. . .I'm so sorry. It should have been me. "Wu-wu, we're home!" Duo yelled but his voice was a little muffled by the closed door. How was it that Duo could always carry a happy-go-lucky demeanor? Especially since his best friend had just been killed. "Is Trowa back yet?" Duo continued still cheerful. Trowa couldn't hear a reply. "Maybe you should go talk to him Heero." Duo suggested. It was the first time he had heard the braided boy serious. "After all, you're the closet thing to a friend he has. I'd go talk to him, but he might slug me." Silence erupted in the main room and a moment later, there was a tap on the door. Trowa said nothing as he turned his back to the door. His emerald eyes focused on the window that was slightly opened. Light washed over the room as Heero entered and closed the door behind him. He walked over to the bed and sat on the edge. His colbat eyes traced the form laying down. "You did what you had to Trowa. It was your mission. You didn't know he was there." Trowa closed his eyes and tried to force away the world. "He was too weak to be a soldier, but he still agreed to it. He knew what could happen, and he choose his own destiny. It was his own fault." Anger waged through the Latin as he sat up straight and narrowed his deep green eyes. "Quatre was not weak! He choose this because he wanted peace. He didn't expect me to blow him up." "You were following orders. It wasn't your fault. I'm not saying Quatre was a weak person or that his objectives were wrong. I'm saying that he was psychically weak and he knew that. He knew that the weak are always captured first. He knew what could happen and that he could walk away any time. . .but he didn't. Whether or not you destroyed that base, he was going to die. At least this way he wasn't endlessly tortured for information." Trowa stared deeply into Heero's emotionless face. "Compared to what they could have done to him, you gave him a painless death." "I could have saved him." "How?. . .How could you have saved him when you didn't know." Trowa's face fell as he stared at the bed sheets. He didn't know how to explain it to Heero. The fact that he could always feel when the blonde was near. "How did you guys find out about it?" "Wu Fei." "How did he?" "Don't know. I didn't bother to ask him." A silence fell between the two for a moment. "I'm sorry Trowa." Heero whispered and, to Trowa's surprise, the Japanese's strong arms engulfed him in an embrace. The hug was only for a second before he pulled away and left the room. Left a grief stricken surprised Trowa alone.
Since he started, he dropped two eggs, he had forgotten to add milk to the batter, and when he did, the spoon fell into it twice. It was a miracle that he had even succeeded in making the mix, let alone manage to cook each pancake to perfection. He had just poured the last of the batter into the pan for the final pancake when something caught the corner of his eye. The spatula fell from his hand and crashed onto the wooden floor as his green eyes beheld the reflection in the window. It was Quatre. The blonde reflection was unmistakable. Trowa spun around quickly to face the love of his life. However, it wasn't Quatre standing behind him by the door like the image claimed. It was Wu Fei. "You're a little jumpy this morning." The Chinese pilot commented. Confused, Trowa turned back to the window. All he saw was his and Wu Fei's reflection. "Are you okay?" The Nataku pilot asked softly and stepped behind the Latin. Trowa only nodded and turned his attention back to breakfast. "You are aware that it's Maxwell's turn to cook?" Another nod. "I just needed something to do." With that he bent to pick up the spatula and rewashed it in the sink. "Well, I'm not complaining. At least I don't have to worry about him burning the place down." Wu Fei relaxed as he grabbed a plate and helped himself to the pancakes. "How did you find out about Quatre?" "I was doing some adjustments to Nataku's cockpit when I picked up a signal." "Where was he captured?" "The Saddler Factory." Trowa thought about that a moment. "You didn't go to try and save him?" "Yuy told me that you would handle it because he was being transferred to the base that was part of your mission." Trowa stared at the pancake in the skillet. How did Heero know where my mission was? He couldn't help but wonder. The only person he talked to about his missions was Quatre, and he didn't really give much detail. Usually just where about he was going to be. Never the exact base. Quatre would never tell anyone else though. Not even Duo. Something wasn't right. He could feel it. "Hey Barton, are you okay?" Wu Fei asked then pointed at the stove. Trowa was so lost in thought that he didn't notice how burnt the food was becoming. "Maybe I should worry about you burning the house down." ~ * ~
